Top tips for a successful Performing Arts audition

Auditions

Eat breakfast…

Even if you’ve had a sleepless night or are full of nerves, make sure you eat a good breakfast – and eat it early enough so your body can fully digest it.

Be prepared…

Make sure you know what’s expected of you. Show up early and be prepared to sing, dance or act straight away. Allow time to travel to the audition venue and find its location with plenty of time to spare.

Relax…

Don’t let your nerves get the better of you. Try not to look and sound uncomfortable or tense, even if you are.

Be confident…

It sounds simple but this takes practice. Walk in the door with your head held high. Be wary of shuffling your feet. You don’t get sympathy points if you’re nervous, not feeling well, or are having a bad day – leave that all outside the door. You’re being sized up from the minute you walk in, so practice good posture and body language before you arrive. And don’t forget to smile – that’s the lasting impression you want to leave.

Show your personality…

Let it shine through in all areas!

When you arrive, stay focused…

Don’t blow your focus by excitably talking to everyone in the waiting area. Be nice, but don’t waste focus and energy on mad chatter or by letting people infect you with their terror and nerves. Just stay with it and calmly concentrate on the job at hand, which is the execution of your best, most focused and connected work.

Be yourself…

When you step into the room to meet the audition panel, be yourself: a slightly nervous, but nicely focused you. Use your face, your voice and your body. Don’t borrow strange or emotional voices. Don’t pull faces. Just connect to the words and then the panel can connect to you. It’s all about focus and connection.

Finally…

Remember that no matter how intimidated you may be by the panel, they want you to do well. They want to have the best actors, singers and dancers to select from and are hoping that everyone walking into that audition room is the best they’ve ever seen.
